Tracy Feakes decided to help her friend’s daughter Kayla, who needed a new prosthetic limb and started a fundraising campaign in conjunction with the Standard Bank Cycle Challenge back in 2014. Tracy raised enough money to fund the purchase of a prosthetic limb and then some! She placed the money in a trust and after Kayla received her prosthetic arm, they left the money to see if Kayla might ever need a replacement.

Tracy and Kayla had a discussion at the beginning of the year and decided to use the leftover money to help others. Since then the money has helped make a difference for a few children who could not afford new prosthetics.

“At the beginning of the year, we helped Tom Brown a young man who was hit by a taxi and lost his leg waiting for road accident to help him, we spoke to his doctor, Dr Eugene Rossouw – Orthotist and Prosthetic Services who had been working with Tom and offered to pay for the prosthesis and agreed that the day that the Road accident fund paid out the money would be used to help Tom if needed or go towards helping someone else like a pay it forward campaign.” – Blake Dyason

Shortly after that, the friends came across a story from a teacher who wrote about Malwande, a very young boy whose homemade leg broke at school. They contacted the school and covered the costs to get him to a Doctor. He now has a leg that fits giving him a new lease on life.

We got in contact with Tracy after Blake shared her story and asked her what inspired all this? She just responded that she wanted to help her friend and to give Kayla a better quality of life. She had watched her grow up and knew all the challenges she faced and saw every achievement Kayla made.

A simple act done by an everyday woman has changed the lives of a few more people. We love celebrating people that work to make a difference, no matter how big or small!
